Best for

Screenshots and photos containing names, addresses, faces, account numbers or other details you do not want to share.

Privacy

Your image is opened and edited on your device. Image contents and filenames are not uploaded or included in product analytics. Read our privacy policy

What should you cover?

Check the whole image for names, addresses, numbers, faces and identifying details. Include repeated information, reflections, notification previews and text near the edges. A box only hides the area you select.

Redaction or metadata removal?

Redaction changes what people can see in the picture. Metadata removal handles information stored inside the file, such as GPS tags and camera details. Use the metadata remover when you want to keep the picture unchanged.

Limitations

  • Supports still JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 25 MB and 12 megapixels. HEIC, GIF, animated images and PDFs are not supported.
  • You choose what to cover. The tool does not detect private information automatically or check whether you have missed anything.
  • The output is a new PNG at the displayed image's original dimensions. Browser rendering can change colour slightly; this is not a lossless file rewrite.
  • Only the downloaded copy is redacted. Review it before sharing and keep the original private.

Questions

How do I redact text in an image?

Upload the image and drag a box over the full text, including its edges. Repeat for other details, prepare the download and save the PNG. Undo last box removes your most recent selection if you need to try again.

Can someone remove the black boxes from the download?

The PNG contains black pixels in the covered areas, not editable boxes or hidden layers. It does not retain the covered source pixels. Information elsewhere in the image can still reveal what you meant to hide, so review the whole result.

Is redacting an image the same as blurring it?

No. This tool replaces selected areas with solid black. Blur and pixelation leave altered versions of the original detail, which can remain readable. Use a box large enough to cover the entire detail.

Does the download keep the original metadata?

No original EXIF, GPS, comments or editing layers are copied into the PNG. The image is rendered into a new file. For metadata removal without changing the picture encoding, use the photo metadata remover instead.

Can I redact an image on my phone?

Yes. Select a supported image, drag with one finger to add each box, then prepare and download the PNG. You can undo a box and draw it again if needed.

Is this free, and does it change the original?

It is free and requires no account. The original file stays unchanged. Download the redacted copy and share that file.
