How to improve a soft or dark photo
By Sekora Studios · Updated
Open Image Enhancer, raise brightness or contrast if the photo is dark or flat, and add a little sharpness if edges look soft. Inspect at full view. The tool does not invent missing detail, remove motion blur, or increase resolution.
Steps
- Open Image Enhancer and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo.
- Lift brightness for a dark frame, then contrast if the image still looks grey.
- Add sharpness in small steps. Stop if you see halos or extra noise.
- Download a new copy. Keep the original if you need to try again.
What sharpness can and cannot do
Sharpness increases edge contrast. It can make a slightly soft JPEG look crisper. A photo that is out of focus or streaked from camera movement will still be out of focus.
Strong sharpness emphasizes noise. Compare the preview and reduce the control if edges look harsh.
When to use other tools
Use Brighten Image for a single brightness job, or Adjust Image when you want more tonal controls. Compress after you like the look, because a later JPG export can soften edges again.
