How to mirror an image for iron-on transfers
By Sekora Studios · Updated
Open Flip Image, choose your design, use Flip horizontal, and check that lettering is mirrored in the preview. Print that mirrored copy onto transfer paper according to the paper’s instructions. After ironing, the design reads the right way on the fabric.
Steps
- Open Flip Image and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP design. Use PNG when you need a transparent background.
- Select Flip horizontal. Confirm that text now reads backwards on screen.
- Download the mirrored copy. Keep an unflipped original so you can reprint.
- Load the mirrored file in your print dialog. Follow the transfer paper for heat, time and peeling.
Why the preview looks backwards
Heat-transfer paper is printed on the side that will face the fabric, then flipped during ironing. A horizontal flip on the file matches that second flip.
A vertical flip is the wrong move for a standard shirt transfer. Use rotation if the design is merely sideways.
Light ink on dark fabric
Some papers for dark shirts already include a white backing and tell you not to mirror. Read the pack. This tool only flips pixels; it does not add a white underbase or change print colour.
More questions
Should every transfer be mirrored?
Most light-fabric inkjet transfers need a horizontal flip. Dark-fabric and printable vinyl products vary. Follow the paper or vinyl instructions.
Will flipping change the size?
No. Width and height stay the same. Resize separately if the print area is smaller than the design.
