How to redact private details in a photo
By Sekora Studios · Updated
Open Redact Image, choose a still JPG, PNG or WebP file, drag a box over each private detail, then prepare the download. The boxes become solid black pixels in a new file at the original dimensions. You choose what to cover; the tool does not find faces or account numbers for you.
Steps
- Choose one still JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 25 MB and 12 megapixels. HEIC, GIF, animated images and PDFs are not supported.
- Drag over every name, face, badge, address, screen or number. Cover the edges of each detail.
- Review the whole image, including reflections, taskbars and EXIF-unrelated text in the picture.
- Select Prepare download, then download the redacted file. Share that copy. The original stays unchanged.
Boxes replace pixels
The download is a flat image. The covered areas are black in the file you send, not a hideable layer. Browser rendering can change colour slightly; this is a new encoded image, not a lossless rewrite of the original bytes.
For a softer hide, Blur a Face applies blur or pixelation to a rectangle you place. Use solid redaction when you need the detail gone.
Metadata is a separate step
Redaction changes visible pixels. GPS, camera and author tags can remain until you run Remove metadata on a still JPG, PNG or WebP copy.
More questions
Can I redact a PDF?
This tool works on still images. Convert PDF pages to images first, redact each page, then build a PDF from the redacted images if you need a document again.
Does it detect faces automatically?
No. You place every box. Check the full-size result before sharing.
